Birth-3 Years Developmental Diagnostic Program

The Center for Audiology, Speech, Language, and Learning offers a number of diagnostic and intervention services for children birth to three years of age.

Developmental Diagnostic Program

The Developmental Diagnostic Program is an innovative and collaborative evaluation program for children with delays and disorders in communication development. Evaluations occur within the Center for Audiology, Speech, Language, and Learning at Northwestern University in Evanston. The program may also be referred to as a “medical diagnostic” through the Early Intervention System of Illinois.

The team, led by pediatrician Dr. Benjamin Kornfeld, conducts multidisciplinary evaluations for children with developmental differences to effectively diagnose developmental delays, autism spectrum disorders, and other communicative disorders.

Mission
To provide families with a family-centered diagnostic process for children 0-3 years of age with communication-based developmental delays, including autism spectrum disorders, through the integration of cutting-edge research, professional training, and high quality clinical service.

What to expect
We understand that each child has a unique learning style, and a full assessment of those skills cannot always be completed in one visit. Additional visits may often be required. In order to understand your child's learning style, our program is designed to assist parents in understanding the next best steps to support their child's development through a series of appointments.

Visit 1: Joint Assessment Session
The first evaluation session with your child will include play-based standardized assessments and will be led by Benjamin Kornfeld, MD, pediatrician, and a team of pediatric specialists. The team will be chosen based on the individual child’s needs identified on intake, and most often includes a pediatric speech-language pathologist, developmental therapist, and graduate-level student clinicians.

Visit 2: Secondary Assessment Session
We recognize that a child’s performance may vary from day to day. A second evaluation session may be scheduled with a member of the team to further evaluate specific strengths and challenges that were identified in the initial assessment session.

Visit 3: Feedback Session
Dr. Kornfeld will meet with you to discuss the evaluation results. Dr. Kornfeld will discuss the team’s diagnosis and recommendations, and develop a collaborative plan for ‘next steps’.

Audiology Visit
A visit with our pediatric audiologist will be scheduled if your child has not had a formal hearing test. The hearing test can be done in conjunction with another appointment, or on a separate day, whatever is best for your child and your schedule.

Scheduling an Appointment

Once you have been referred by your Early Intervention Service Coordinator for an evaluation, we will need to gather some information about you and your child. Our office will contact you as soon as we have received all of your forms to help you make your first appointment. Our Administrative Team will work with your child’s Service Coordinator to be sure we have all information to complete the evaluation.

If you have specific questions or would like to be sure we have received all of your paperwork, please call us at 847-491-3165 or email us at NUCASLL@northwestern.edu.
