Voice, Speech, Language Service and Swallowing Center

Clinical Faculty from Northwestern University Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders serve as the speech-language pathology team for Northwestern Memorial Hospital and a number of Northwestern Medicine clinics (ALS, Otolaryngology, and NICU Follow up). Housed in the Arkes Pavilion of Northwestern Medical Campus, the speech-language pathologists on the team provide clinical services from early childhood to adulthood, provide clinical training to Northwestern University speech-language pathology graduate students, and conduct research on speech and swallowing disorders and their treatment.

Our research and clinical experience is reflected in the publication of original, scientific articles and chapters on swallowing rehabilitation in major textbooks in speech-language pathology and otolaryngology. We have developed therapy procedures used with patients who have dysphagia (difficulty swallowing). We have completed a large number of research projects and are currently working on several innovative techniques. Collectively, we have more than 40 years’ experience in evaluation and treatment of speech, language and swallowing disorders. Members of our group lecture extensively in the United States and abroad and are among the most respected educators in speech-language pathology in the world. We are continuing our research work to expand the frontiers of evaluation and treatment of swallowing disorders.
